Lambert Family - Hunter Valley History Connection

William Lambert was born on 12th November, 1863 at Oakenvale Creek, a gold mining settlement near Nundle in New South Wales, Australia.

His parents were Thomas Lambert, who had arrived from Lancashire a few years earlier and Mary Wilmott, a 'currency lass' born in Newcastle. They already had one son, James aged one year when William was born.

William spent the first few years of his life at Oakenvale Creek where he was required to help his father Thomas mine for gold, and by an early age he was already pushing barrows around the mine.

In the late 1860's William's family return to Newcastle. Mary's parents had both died by this time and William never met his convict grandparents. Like so many other families, their misdeeds perpetrated decades before became dark family secrets, whispered of perhaps but never openly spoken of.

There were many members of Mary's family still living in Newcastle - brothers and sisters and their children and Thomas and Mary would spend the remainder of their life in the district. Following their return to Newcastle, they had two more children. Eliza in 1875 and Samuel in 1880 both born in Adamstown, a suburb of Newcastle.

William entered the coal mines as a young man and remained working at the coal face for the rest of his life. In 1885 when he was twenty-one, he married Elizabeth Nethersole the daughter of Michael Nethersole and Harriet Wrightmore. Elizabeth was also born near the Hanging Rock gold mines. Perhaps they knew each other as children.

William and Elizabeth settled in Victoria Street, Adamstown where they lived for many years. Adamstown was a thriving township by this time, and was mostly populated by mining families who worked in the nearby mines. By 1891 the population had grown to 2,030. Over the next few years William and Elizabeth's family grew. In 1888 their first child, Mary Eveleen (Eva) was born, Esther was born in 1892 and James in 1894. William, Arthur and Clarence followed in the next ten years.

In 1903 the entire family together with Thomas (William's father) and Samuel (William's brother) were all living in the house in Victoria Street, Adamstown. William was an active member of the Newcastle Gun club and he took part in all prominent pigeon shooting events. In the early 1900's he often went duck shooting at Eraring, on Lake Macquarie. He purchased a property there in 1909 and his association with Eraring was one which his descendants were to continue for many years after his death.

In 1918, William met with an accident while mining and never fully recovered. After an illness extending eleven weeks, he died on 18th August 1921 in Adamstown.
