Not sure whether this will actually create a reply to Mary-Anne's posting about this marriage. For what it's worth, I am a descendant of William & Margaret through their son, James Albert. Their marriage certificate states that Margaret was born at Buchanan, NSW. Various certificates of the children show her as being born at Brooks Flat, which I understand was another name for Buchanan. I am interested in the info about Margaret being born 15 May 1840 at the Upper Williams River as I have found no record of this. The family has a copy of a baptism certif which shows parents as James & Ellen but this always seemed strange to me as it is registered in Sydney. I recently found a record of a William Watson as a contributor to the Donegal Relief Fund at Williams River in 1859. I can find no record of Jane Daly/Daley's death in 1851 on the NSW BMDs, unless James Is a misprint for Jane. I have not yet investigated my Margaret's family but I have collected info on William Watson, whose history before his marriage in 1863 is something of a mystery. Perhaps someone else has info on him & his arrival in Australia. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi there,

Great to hear from you. Working backwards through your posting Jane Daley nee Fahey was killed in an accident that was handled by the Coronor of the time Capt Thomas Cook of Auchentorlie, Dungog.Patrick ,her husband, was in his employ at the time. Due to the fact that record keeping in that area at the time was kept by clergy (there was no Catholic Church in Dungog) and inquest records did not survive, they were never handed over to the government when they took over registrations later that century. However there is a listing in the State Archive of NSW of inquests into deaths and best of all a Newpaper article in the Maitland Mercury 7th May 1851. I shall try and scan it and attach it to this site.

Looking at the information you have about your Margaret Watson nee Daley makes me think its not my Margaret. I have the details of Margarets birth and baptism from the Newcastle Family History Society. They found it in the Hunter Valley Parish register. Record states:
Daly,Margaret 1840 R.C Parish
Daily ? Darby) Register Mfm LH 17
Forename:Margaret
Baptised 7.8.1840
Born: 15.5.1840
Father Patrick Dailey
of Upper Williams River occupation: Settler
Mother Jane Dailey
Parish E.Maitland County Northuberland Offical: E. Mahoney

Id be interested to see whats on the baptismal certificate you have. This is going to be the test!.

On the marriage cert and death cert of Margaret Watson it states parents unknown.I did find an article in the Maitland Mercury about a Margaret Daley, orphan, being mistreated by Ann Hannigan of West Maitland 24 Feb 1849 aged about 7 years of age. Also Ann Daley mistreated by the same Maitland Mercury 14 April 1849.

If I cant work out how to attach these articles on this site I can give you interntet references or email them to you.
Ill keep researching and let you know if I come up with anything else.

Yours Truely
Mary-Anne
